Sophie Wild and Naomi Clemence: Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge
On Monday 1st August (not, as the eagle eyed among you may spot, Tuesday 9th as originally planned due to some unforeseen and insurmountable logistical circumstances!), we will be walking the Yorkshire Three Peaks in 12 hours or less to raise as much money as we can for the charity Kids At School In Nepal (KASIN). We will cover around 24 miles, including 5,200ft (1,585m) of ascent, climbing Pen-y-ghent (694m), Whernside (736m) and Ingleborough (723m) as well as walking between each peak.
Nepal has always held a fascination for us as our Dad visited the country in the early seventies after driving overland to India with some friends – a major challenge in those days! Whilst ours isn’t quite so mammoth a feat (maybe we’ll do some Nepalese peaks next time!), we both feel that being Dales born and bred, the fact we’ve never done all three peaks together is an omission we really should rectify. We’re also confident it will present a sufficiently severe challenge to be worthy of lots of lovely sponsorship.
We are both passionate about education and believe all children have the right to a free education wherever they live. KASIN works directly with schools, teachers and volunteers in the remote Pulkharka Valley, about a 10 hour 4x4 dirt road drive from Kathmandu, Nepal. The problems its schools face include no electricity, crumbling walls, no water or toilets, poor classroom furniture and very few teaching resources. Despite this, and little formal teacher training, the schools are staffed by dedicated and enthusiastic teachers, some employed by the government, some paid directly by the local community. KASIN listens to local needs and then supports them wherever possible; funding goes directly to specific projects, improving school facilities, providing teacher training and learning resources.
KASIN trustees visit annually at their own expense to ensure funding has been allocated in line with the constitution ‘To advance the education of children in Nepal’ and the charity is entirely maintained by volunteers, maximising the funds to directly support the schools. £5 each month pays for a child’s education in school (including uniform and books). A typical primary school teacher’s salary in Nepal is £700 and a head teacher might earn £850.
Please help us to make a positive difference in the lives of these children who have already faced so many challenges; a decent school education will have such an impact on their future.
Fundraising has now finished, but thanks for visiting this page.

Kids at school in Nepal - "A small charity with big ambition. Seeing first hand the enthusiasm of kids in Nepal to learn and develop, convinced two cyclists that they wanted to do more than give pens and sweets to these children. In partnership with Nepali friends they founded www.kidsatschoolnepal.co.uk A charity set up to improve education for children in Phulkharka, a rural and deprived area of Nepal."
